Picking strawberries

Pick-your own strawberries are usually available for 2 weeks at the height of berry season.  Our strawberry fields are open for picking mornings and evenings.  We have found it is better for the people and the strawberries not to pick in the heat of mid-day.  We sell our berries by the pound.  We weigh your container when you arrive and record the empty weight so we don't charge you for the weight of your container.  You may fill your containers as you wish.  People use strawberry boxes, empty ice cream containers, dishpans or buckets.

The deeper the container, the more your berries will become smashed.  We have containers available for 75 cents if you don't have one.

What to Expect

When you arrive at our farm, there is a parking area along Disston View Drive not far from the intersection with Church Road.  There is a small building located here to weigh your empty containers.  You will then be directed to the section of the field which is being picked.  Sometimes this mean walking a little distance.  At the field there will be someone to assign you a specific place to pick.

When you are finished picking you will be asked to stick a small flag in the row where you stopped.  The hope is that in carefully organizing the picking areas each person has a spot to pick with an adequate number of berries.  If you are having a problem finding berries, please let the field person know and they will assist you in finding another spot.  When you are finished return to the shed to have your berries weighed.  You may pay with cash or a check.

How to pick strawberries

All of the strawberries on a plant do not ripen at the same time.  Consequently, part of picking strawberries is looking for the ripe ones.  Strawberries will be sweeter if they are totally red with no green or white tips on them.  Once a strawberry is red it will not grow larger.  Try to pick all the red berries you see.  If ripe fruit is left on the plant, it will begin to rot and spoil the other strawberries that will be ready in a few days.  Your strawberries will stay fresh longer if you pick them with the caps (the little green leaves on top of each berry).

Who can pick strawberries?

We invite everyone to enjoy picking strawberries.  Children of all ages are allowed in the patch.  When possible, we give parents with children an outside edge of the field so they have more space to move.  We expect parents will be supervising and teaching their children how to pick.  Sometimes younger children really enjoy picking but are ready to quit before you are.  We invite them to play in the sand area located right next to the weigh-in shed.  There is also a portable toilet available for use.
